Blocks
For bigger projects, balsa wood and basswood blocks provide a large piece of stock that can be cut and shaped to your needs. This softwood is perfect for carving, yet strong enough to hold intricate designs in architectural and engineering models. It can be cut and shaped using hand tools or power tools, responds well to adhesive, and can be painted or stained to achieve any look.
Sheets
Lightweight yet strong, balsa wood and basswood sheets are useful in a variety of crafts and architectural projects. They’re easy to work with and cut easily with a hobby knife. Create a balsa wood bridge or add a basswood sheet as the exterior wall of a scale model building. These can be stained or painted with latex paint or polyurethane to represent any type of wood.
Strips
Intricate details and small projects are well-suited to balsa wood and basswood strips. These thin pieces of scale lumber are great for framing architectural and engineering models, adding embellishments to a work in progress, or as supports for larger structures. Students can build with scale lumber according to a blueprint, or learn about the forces of gravity and physics as they assemble their own unique design.
Additional Scale Modeling Supplies
To complete their projects, students will need a variety of scale modeling supplies. A sizing gauge is helpful to find the measurements of a piece of scale lumber when it’s been separated from its pack. Scale model building kits are a great way to get kids started and learning the basics before moving on to open-ended construction. Other scale modeling supplies you might need include foam boards, cutting mats, multi-cutters and replacement blades, adhesive, foil, pins, wax paper, razor saws and more. Rest assured, Midwest Technology Products has everything you need for architecture, engineering, and construction lessons in your school.
